Wayne Elcock opens new boxing shop
Wayne “Mad Dog” Elcock has opened his new boxing store on Boldmere road Sutton. The Birmingham Boxing Column was there to chat to the former WBU World, Commonwealth and British Champion and a few of his boxing friends who popped into see him and have a look around the store.
The store is a nice size and is stocked with boxing equipment for newcomers to the serous professional with some of the top names in boxing, from Ringside,Top Ten, Pro box, Adidas and of course Reyes the Ringside store has got the lot. While I was in the store a few ex pros came to in to show there support for there pal and fellow boxer.
The first Ex pro I talked to was former British, Commonwealth and WBU World
champion Tony Oakey. I asked the Portsmouth light heavyweight what he thought of Wayne's new shop? Tony said “it's good to see Wayne doing well, we used to have some great spars against each other when we were both pro’s and we done a charity match together a few years ago. It's great to see him staying in boxing with box-clever his gym and now the new store”.
I then talked to ex professional Arv Mittoo, Arv who has had 100 Professional boxing matches and when I asked him about Wayne and the store he said, “it's fantastic, it has all come together for him. He started out in a van doing box-clever now he has his own gym and now the shop, It's great to see him doing so well”.
While I was looking around the store a former Commonwealth Champion walked threw the doors to see Wayne. Don Boardhurst 32 and is now on the come back trail after winning his fight a few weeks ago. I asked Don what he thought of the shop he told me “it looks great you got all the top brands here and it's good to have a shop like this in Birmingham that caters for the grass roots to professional”. I also asked Din when his next fight will be he informed me he was waiting on a date but probably September or October.
I then talked to the man himself and asked Wayne how he thought the shop would go? The former British champ said “Hopefully pretty well, I think it is something Birmingham has been missing with boxing equipment for everyone but I am really looking at your serous boxers, like the amateurs and the professionals and for people who what the best gear”.
Wayne also pointed out that the Ringside line is a good brand and a lot of pro boxers are moving over to them and is one of the reasons he could move to a bigger shop.
I then asked Wayne why the move to Sutton? Wayne told me “we have a lot of people over this way from Rectory boxing, 2nd City ABC and UTC there are a lot of clubs over this side of Birmingham unfortunately in Chelmsley wood there was only my club, but they can still get any of the stuff they need off me”.
Dexter’s Thoughts
When you go to meet one former world Champion and 2 turn up at the same time, it was great to see so many ex pro's and pro's come and support Wayne on opening day. It was a pleasure to be able to chat to Tony Oakey, Arv Mittoo and Don Broadhurst about the store and Wayne's success. On opening day the store was busy and I saw Wayne giving out good advice to customers looking to get the right boxing equipment for themselves. Wayne has made a success of every venture he has started and I can see his new store being his next big success. I wish him all the best.
