SPBF Irish Title Announcements

Statement from Dexter

As you may be aware I was injured during sparing last week sustaining a bad split to my upper lip. After going to the A&E at City hospital I was given 4 stitches, 2 on the inside and two on the outside of my lip. The Doctor informed me that the stitches should be removed in seven days time, I then asked the doctor how long it would take to heal as I was fighting in 8 weeks time? He informed me it could take up to four to six weeks to heal but may still be tender and could be easily opened again. This was not the news I wanted to hear as it would mean no sparring which if any body knows my training routine is a big part of my training.

With this injury in mind and the fact I have pick up a few more in training I have decided after talking to my team and the promoter to pull out of the SPBF Irish Heavyweight title fight as I will not be able to prepare for it properly. To say I am gutted it a understatement, this is a title that I really wanted and I apologize to my opponent Craig Taylor for having to pull out of the fight as I know he was well up for this one.

The fight could happen in the future but at the age of 48 old father time is starting to catch up with me and it may be time to call it a day. I have accumulated 6 area titles at 2 different weights over the years and have nothing to prove to anyone, if the Hodgin’s fight was my last one I can look back and know that all the titles I won were against ticket sellers (opponents who came to win) and weren’t against journey men. I thank everyone who has ever came to support me or messaged me there support, it means a hell of a lot to me especially when I hear the “Dexter” chant. I won’t lie I am going to miss it, but I will now be able to focus more on the Birmingham Boxing Column and training the next generation of boxers. I still have plans to have at least one more fight before I'm 50, but I will see how I feel when it comes round.

Once again thank you one and all.
