Wolverhampton’s Kirstie Bavington has reclaimed the EBU European Welterweight title with a split decision point victory. The thirty-two-year-old ex-pro footballer and school teacher traveled over to France Laval to take on Marine Beauchamp (30) for the now vacant title. Bavington first won the title beating Timea Belik back in May of two thousand and twenty-two. Bavington then went on to defend the title against Naomi Mannes in November of two thousand and twenty-two before the EBU took the title back.
Bavington came into this contest with a record of eight wins and two draws out of fifteen fights and had lost three out of her last four contests with one of her fights being the first time two females fought for a British title. Bavington’s opponent Beauchamp, came into the fight with only one defeat on her record with six wins and one draw. Bavington weighed in ten stone six with Beaucgamp coming in ten stone five with Brahim Ait Aadi reffing this ten two-minute round Welterweight title fight.
The Birmingham Boxing Column contacted the two-time EBU welterweight champion to ask her how she thought the fight went. Bavington told the Column, “it feels great, I felt like I was on top throughout the fight. I always knew it was going to be hard to get the decision in France, I’m glad it’s back in my hands”.
Bavington was crowned EBU European Welterweight Champion on a split decision with judge Guido Cavalleri scoring it 96 to 94 Beauchamp, judge Fabian Guggenheim scoring it 98 to 92 Bavington and Judge Juergen Langos having it 97 to 93 Bavington.
Dexter’s Thoughts
What a great victory for Kirstie Bavington who has pulled off the impossible mission getting the result in France. I have followed Bavingtons career from the start where she got a draw in her first at the Tommy Owens Promotions show back in May of 2018. I remember how disappointed she was with her performance that night but I watched the Wolverhampton fighter improve with every fight eventually winning the EBU European Welterweight title for the first time. Bavington has not been scared of rolling the dice, taking on some big names like Cherrelle Brown for a WBC international title, and challenging for the vacant British welterweight title against Lauren Price. I’m chuffed to bits for Bavington and her BcB team as I could not see why the title was taken off her in the first place. What Bavington has proved is that if you are determined and have the focus, anything is possible; if you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything. Now Bavington has been re-crowned EBU champ anything could happen she could potentially get a world title shot or even dome of that Riyadh season money by getting on one of their shows. Whatever happens, I just want to say a massive congratulations to Kirstie Bavington the Two-time EBU European Welterweight Champion.
