Eastside Gyms Kaisee Benjamin is set to battle for WBO European title on the Boxxer Promotions show in Birmingham on May 6th. The show will be held at the Genting Arena and the contest will be over 10 three-minute rounds for the super Lightweight version of the title. The match will be on the undercard of the Joshua Buatsi verse Pawel Stepten fight and will be aired live on Sky Sports.
Twenty-seven-year-old Benjamin from Birmingham has won sixteen contests and drawn one out of nineteen fights with his first defeat coming in the Boxxer Tournament which was over three three-minute minute rounds. Benjamin is coming off a defeat against the unbeaten Dalton Smith who defended the super Lightweight British title with a points decision in November of last year. Benjamin spent a long time as a Midlands area Welterweight champ, first beating Alex Fearon when Fearon's corner threw the towel in, in the seventh round back in November 2018. He then went on and defended the title three times drawing against Danny Ball in March of 2019 and beating Levi Ferguson on points in October of the same year. He then defended it against the 0-Taker Ben Fields in December of 2020 winning on points.
When I contacted him and asked him about his title challenge he said " I'm ecstatic can’t wait to fight in my home town for the first time on a big show and can’t wait to put on a performance".
His opponent and WBO European super Lightweight title holder has just as impressive record. Thirty-year-old Sean McComb has lost one contest in fifteen and claimed the WBO European title in his last fight when he took on Zsolt Osadem in December of last year beating him on points. McComb from Belfast’s only defeat came in a twelve-round contest for the vacant lightweight Commonwealth title when he was stopped in the seventh by Gavin Gwyane back in February of 2019.
Dexter’s Thoughts
It’s great to hear that Kaisee is back in title action after his points defeat to Dalton Smith at the end of last year. Benjamin has always impressed me with his array of talent but can sometimes take a while to get going. I was the first person to interview him just before he turned over to the pros back in 2017 and have championed this young man as one to watch. He is a cracking boxer and has all the skills and talent in his toolbox to win this title and claim a European crown. I think he and his team will have learned a lot from his British title defeat and will have a game plan to beat the Belfast Boy in Brum. It is just great to see this young fighter progress to the level of fighting for British and European titles and who knows how far the hard hitting Kaisee Benjamin can go. At 27 he has a lot of miles left on the clock and if he gets passed this hurdle who knows what’s next for the Eastside gym fighter?
Winning this title will also get him entry into the prestigious Bbcolumn ‘Hall of Fame’ Champions which of course is his main goal, I look forward to entering his name after the 6th May.
