Birmingham’s Nyall Berry battled his way to victory in a hard fought six round contest on the GBM Promotions live on DAZN. The twenty-five-year-old from Chelmsley wood was taking on a late replacement Tempela Maharusi (25) over six three-minute rounds in the Super Bantamweight division. Berry was supposed to be fighting for the IBO continental super bantamweight title over ten three-minute rounds but unfortunately his opponent had to pull out. Berry was coming into the fight with a record of eleven wins out of twelve contests with five stoppages. Berry’s opponent was a tough fighter from Tanzania who now resides in Northern Ireland. Maharusi came into the fight with a record of eleven wins and four draws out of Twenty-three fights.
Maharusi started the first round well shooting out a long jab, Berry seemed to be having a look at his opponent letting some nice shots of but Maharusi won the round. Maharusi continued to keep it long throwing out his jab in the second, Berry got his range and landed some combinations with Maharusi landing some shots at the end but Berry just edged it. Berry put the pressure on in the third in this high paced contest, Maharusi moved well but Berry was landing some nice fast combinations with the quality shots coming from Berry.
Great movement by Maharusi as Berry pressed banging in some nice shots and slipping well in the fourth. Maharusi landed some good shots of his own keeping the fight competitive but Berry got this round for me. Berry took the centre of the ring in the fifth using his jab well, Maharusi seemed to have slowed with Berry looking in full control using educated pressure to win the round. Maharusi was still famevand put it on Berry in the final round, Berry stayed composed slipping shots and countering well, Maharusi landed some nice one, twos seeming to stun Berry who weather the storm with Maharusi winning the final round.
Judge Steve Grey scored it 58 to 56 Berry, I had it the same.
Dexter’s Thoughts
Very good performance by Berry who was taking on a very game opponent in Maharusi, he may have been a late replacement but he came to win and made Berry work hard for the win. Berry should have been contesting for another title and after the first round it looked like it could be a big banana skin but Berry soon took control. Every round was competitive which was good for Berry as him and his team are on the rebuild after his EBU defeat to Francesco De Rosa in June of 2024. Berry has now won two in a row with one stoppage and I’m sure he will soon be contesting for bigger titles than an IBO continental title. Berry is a promising fighter and with his Eastside team behind him I can see him going far.
