Convincing Victory For Walker

Wolverhampton’s Conah Walker secured a convincing points victory on the undercard of the Edwards v Yafai contest live on DAZN. The twenty-nine-year-old was taking on the experienced veteran Lewis Ritson (31) at the Resorts World Birmingham on the Matchroom promotions show called  Bloodlines. Walker came into the contest with a record of thirteen wins and one draw out of seventeen fights, Ritson who was looking to get back to winning ways after losing his last two fights record stood at twenty-three wins out of Twenty-seven fights. Both fighters weighed in ten stone six in a ten round Welterweight contest with Mark Lyson reffing.

Walker set off with a fast tempo in the first round putting nice combinations together finishing the round strong. Ritson started to use his jab in the second but walker was full steam ahead pressing forward landing shots to the head and body. Ritson was looking to use his experience against Walker in the third but ‘The Wolf’ was relentless with his pressure. Walker continued his relentless pace in the fourth with an educated press, Ritson looked to use his jab but seemed very gun-shy as Walker banged in nice shots winning the round. Ritson continued to use his jab well in the fifth but Walker kept busy moving well and using smart pressure, Ritson took many shots on his gloves, but Walker won the round with his high tempo. Ritson looked to fight on the back foot in the fifth as Walker cut the ring off hunting him down, Walker won this round but Ritson got some good shots off near the end.

Ritson was moving well in the sixth using his experience to shoot out a stiff jab, Walker continued to press and landed good shots but I would say Ritson just edged this one. Walker was closing the gap again in the seventh landing some nice combinations switching the attacks from the head and body. Ritson used his jab well in the eighth but Walker won the round. Walker was pinning Ritson to the ropes as he bullied Ritson banging in nice combinations to the head and body, Ritson got the odd shot off but Walker was in full control. Walker was still pressing and using great pressure in the ninth as Ritson used his jab to try and keep Walker at bay, he had some joy getting some good shots off but Walker won the round. Walker looked to finish the final round strong swarming all over Ritson who did look to fire back, Walker kept the pressure on until the final bell with Ritson threw back showing loads of heart landing some big shots with both fighters being shaken, Ritson nicked the final round.

Judge Victor Loughlin scored it 98 to 93 Walker with Kevin Parker and Lee Evans scoring it 97 to 93 Walker. I had it 98 to 92 Walker.

Ritson wins unanimous points decision

Dexter’s Thoughts

Great performance by Walker who showed relentless pressure in an educated manner. Ritson was an excellent opponent who was looking to get back to winning ways but the man known as ‘The Wolf’ hunted his prey down and banged in great combinations winning nearly every round. Walker showed that he is a true contender for the big domestic and European titles and after this performance on a Matchroom show live on DAZN with his massive following Walker will be contesting for these titles very soon. I look forward to seeing Walker in the ring very soon.
