Telford ‘Dangerous’ Liam Davis lived up to his name with an entertaining fifth round stoppage performance against a very game and tough opponent. Davis was on the undercard of the Queensberry promotions ‘Magnificent Seven’ show at the Manchester Arena (18.11.23). Davis was defending his EBU European super-bantamweight title and was scheduled for twelve three-minute rounds. His opponent was the unbeaten Italian Vincenzo La Femina who has won all his thirteen contests with seven of them coming via knockout. Davis who is also unbeaten has won all fourteen of his fights with six of them coming via stoppage. Davis and La Femina both weighed in eight stone nine with Fabian Guggenheim reffing.
A fast start by Davis who couldn’t seem to miss with some cracking straight shots dominating the who won it with ease but did sustain a cut above his right eye, Davis poured on the pressure in the second keeping it long using his jab well with some nice combinations going to the body well, La Femina did have a go back but Davis’s round. Davis continued his high-tempo boxing working hard with great jabs, one-twos and long uppercuts working the body well with La Femina not being able to close the gap. Davis dropped La Femina with a crisp right hand and he was given a standing eight. He was allowed to continue and Davis poured on the pressure and was caught himself and touched down from a short-left hook, Davis took the right count and finished the round strong.
La Femina had grown in conferences and was looking to counter Davis, Davis continued to box well and dropped La Femina again with a nice right hook near the end of the round, La Femina took the right count and saw the round out. The pace seemed to slow at the start of the fifth with Davis still outworking La Femina and looking to draw him on to a stoppage shot. Davis then went on the front foot in the second part of the round piling on the pressure with big shots with the ref jumping in and stopping the fight two minutes into the fifth round.
Dexter’s Thoughts
What a great performance by Liam Davis who was in there with a very game-unbeaten fighter. Davis stated he wanted to fight for the world title sometime next year and I cannot see why that wouldn’t be the case. I do know that the current world champions at Super Bantamweight are highly rated and from what Frank Warren had said he should have a few more fights before going for it, I say if you get offered the chance go for it. I have followed Davis’s career from the start and have seen his progression and he gets better and better every fight. I think Davis would rise to the occasion if he was given the chance to contest for one, I really hope he gets the chance next year.
