Rowley Regis's Tyler Denny impressed on his return to the ring after losing his European title to Hamzah Sheeraz in September of last year. The thirty-three-year-old southpaw was taking on Gambian Elvis Ahorgah (24) on the undercard of the Whittaker v Cameron show at the Resorts World Birmingham and live on Sky Sports. The contest was scheduled for ten three-minute rounds in the Middleweight division with Chris Dean refereeing

Denny started fast using his jab well with some nice one, two’s with some nice combinations and southpaw backhands. Ahorgah got some good shots off but Denny won the round. Ahorgah pressed more in the second, but Denny was moving well, using his jab well and banging in some good combinations. Ahorgah did land some nice backhands, but Denny won the round. Ahorgah continued to press in the third and had some joy with some nice backhands. Denny moved well, turning Ahorgah on the ropes several times, closer round, but Denny edged it with a strong finish to the round

The pace slowed in the fourth with Ahorgah continuing to press with landing some good shots with some heavy backhands. Denny returned fire and won the round with some cracking combinations. Denny seemed to have found the blueprint for Ahorgah in the fifth as the Gambian pressed with Denny showing great movement and nice combinations to outwork Ahorgah and win the round. Ahorgah kept pressing in the sixth landing some good shots, Denny got on his toes and moved well, staying switched on, another close round with Ahorgah just edging it. Ahorgah came out fast and was met by a cracking straight backhand that wobbled him. Denny continued to move and boxed well catching Ahorgah with a nice left, with Ahorgah dropping to the floor. Ahorgah took an eight count and continued with Denny winning the round.

Ahorgah looked to step up the pace in the eighth banging in some good shots. Ahorgah landed a nice big right-hand uppercut that made Denny cover up and take some shots. Ahorgah won this round. Denny used his jab well in the ninth as Ahorgah pressed with Denny being the ring master, controlling the fight as he moved well around the ring, winning the round finishing it the stronger. Denny started well in the final round, banging in some nice shots. Ahorgah continued to press but Denny showed his class with some eye-catching shots, winning the round and the fight.

Ref Chris Dean scored it 97 to 92 Denny, I had it 98 to 91 Denny.
Dexter’s Thoughts
Great performance by Denny, who at thirty-three showed he still has a lot to offer in the Middleweight division. Ahorgah was a very tough opponent, but Denny had a great game plan and answered every question Ahorgah asked. Denny, with this win, will now be looking to fight for titles again and I'm sure that he will have one eye on fighting for the British title in his next few fights. Denny looks really good in this contest, and I have no doubt he will be contending for titles again very soon. The Birmingham Boxing Column looks forward to reporting on Denny again very soon.
