Birmingham’s Levi Vaughan picked himself off the canvas to win his first professional contest. The southpaw known as LJV was taking on thirty-six-year-old Harry Mathews from York in a four-three-minute round contest. Vaughan weighed in twelve stone nine with Mathews coming in thirteen stone two with ‘A’ str referee Kevin Parker reffing
Fast start by Vaughan who used a nice southpaw jab to set up some heavy backhands controlling his debut round. Mathews came out swinging in the second asking questions of Vaughan and continued box well but at times looked frantic.
Mathews then landed a left and right hook dropping the debutant, Vaughan got to his feet took an eight count, and then got behind his southpaw jab to see the round out.
Mathews came out again strong in the third letting some big shots go, Vaughan got behind his jab and landed some nice backhands and combinations to win the round but did look vulnerable to some of Mathews heavy shots. Vaughan continued to use his jab well to control the final round but still looked vulnerable when Mathews put some shots together, close round but Vaughan nicked it for me.
Ref Kevin Parker scored it 49 to 38 Vaughan, I had it the same.
Dexter’s Thoughts
This was a hard first fight for Vaughan as his opponent came to ask questions which is not a bad thing. Vaughan started up well and used his jab to land some nice combinations, but seemed to switch off in the second with Mathews landing some big hooks to put him down. Vaughan picked himself up and saw the round out and went on to win the contest. Vaughan seemed disappointed in his display when I talked to him but I think this is a great learning curve for him as he will not be switching off like that again. I’m sure Vaughan and his team will look at what he did right and wrong and fix it. I look forward to seeing how his career goes.
