Birmingham’s Nico Ogbeide was over the Moon with his points victory over veteran Journeyman Michael Mooney at the Eastside Rooms Birmingham (17.8.24). The thirty-year-old known as the ‘Alchemist’ took his unbeaten record to three wins and one draw in a back-and-forth contest. Mooney (39) from Worcester was entering the ring for the one hundredth and twenty-first time in a four-round Welterweight contest. Ogbeide weighed in nine stone nine with Mooney coming in ten stone two with Ryan Churchill reffing.
Mooney started brightly but Ogbeide took the centre of the Mooney and controlled the round with a nice jab and landing some good backhands, Mooney landed some nice shots of his own but Ogbeide won the round. Mooney continued to ask questions in the second and landed some good shots, Ogbeide moved well using his jab and landing nice back hands close round could not split them.
Back and forth third round with both fighters having joy, some great exchanges, and another close round with Mooney just nicking it. Ogbeide used his jab well in the final round to keep Mooney at bay moving well and picking some nice shots of his own to win the round.
Ref Ryan Churchill had it 39 to 37 to Ogbeide I had it 39 to 38 Ogbeide
Dexter’s Thoughts
Good win for Ogbeide who was given a good test by the veteran Journeyman Michael Mooney. When I saw Ogbeide was going up against Mooney I did think that this could be another banana skin because of the experience of the ‘Mad Man’. But I should not have been worried as Ogbeide showed he could deal with the tricky journeyman who asked him questions every round and made this a very competitive contest. I think these fights are going to be the making of Ogbeide as he is learning on the job and getting tested early in his career. Very good win for Ogbeide and I look forward to seeing him out again very soon.
