Quartermaine Shines As He Claims IBF European Title

Leamington spa's Danny Quartermaine shone in the Skydome Coventry as he showcased his skills claiming the first title of his career. The unbeaten twenty-six-year-old was taking on Alex Rat (31) from Spain for the vacant IBF super featherweight European title as the main event on the BGM promotion show (9.3.23). Quartermaine weighed in nine stone three with Rat coming in nine stone two with Bob Williams reffing.

Scrappy first round with the ref having a word about the holding, Quartermaine pressed forward and landed a short left hook that caught Rat off balance dropping him. Rat got to his feet and continued but Quartermaine controlled the rest of the round. Better boxing from Quartermaine in the second round who was showing great movement using his jab well to set up nice shots, Rat was down again but it was from a slip, Quartermaine’s round. Lots of holding by Rat who did not look like he still wanted to be in there, Quartermaine used great movement setting up some cracking shots with fast hands to win the round. Quartermaine was pressing and putting pressure on Rat who looked to hold and spoil with the ref taking a point off Rat for holding. Quartermaine continued to press and land some good shots, Rat sustained a cut above his right eye due to a clash of heads.

Refferee Bob Williams stopped the fight at the start of the fifth round as Rats corner pulled him out.

Dexter’s Thoughts

Great performance by Danny Quartermaine who showcased his skills against a tough opponent in Rat who had fought at a higher level. There was never any doubt that Quartermaine would win a title but now he holds a version of the European title I can see even bigger ones in his future. Quartermaine has all the qualities to go all the way and with his massive following I think he is destined to contest for world honours at some point in his career.  Now he has signed with BGM Promotions he has the backing he needs to go all the way and I think this European title is just the first in many belts to come

Danny will also be entered into the Bbcolumn ‘Hall of Fame’ as he has claimed European honours.

Congratulations to Danny and his Team.
