Birmingham’s Kane Baker lived up to his ring name of the ‘MexiKane’ as he took on the unbeaten hot prospect Jordan Flynn into deep waters on the undercard of the Joshua, Franklin fight (1.4.23). Baker (32) is a former Super Flyweight Midlands area champ who has had 28 contests winning 18 with one draw in the away corner against Matchroom's Jordan Flynn who was unbeaten in 8 fights. The Matchroom show was being streamed live on DAZN and was held at the 02 Arena London, and was part of the ‘Before the Bell’ show.
Both fighters weighed in for the 8-round Super Flyweight contest 9 stone 3 with Kieran McCann reffing.
Baker was on the front foot from the first bell, Flynn got his jab going trying to control the pace, both of them had a massive tare-up on the ropes at the end of the round with Flynn just edging it. Baker continued on the front foot in the second and got some cracking combinations off on the inside, Flynn tried to keep it long and counter with the jab but Baker poured on the pressure nicking the round. Great third round with Baker getting up close and personal letting nice combinations go in the pocket. Flynn stood with him and let his hands go and started to get the better of the exchanges with some evil uppercuts but the MexiKane returned fire with a lovely left hook wobbling Flynn for a second who came back with an uppercut of his own knocking Bakers gum shield out, Flynn just edged it. Steady fourth round with Baker boxing well on the outside, both fighters seemed to be feeling the pace. Flynn got some good combinations off but Baker got on the inside, I couldn’t really split them.
The fifth was a phone box round with both fighters going toe to toe in the center of the ring, both landed great shots to the body and head but Baker rocked Flynn several times with hard right hooks to win the round. Flynn kept it long at the start of the sixth and got some nice combinations off but he did look tired. Baker had joy when he got in on the inside but Flynn just edged this round. Flynn kept it long in the seventh with Baker sustaining a nasty cut above his right eye due to a clash of heads, Flynn seemed to grow in confidence with the cut and picked his shots on the outside to win the round. Baker poured on the pressure in the final round with Baker trying to close the gap. Flynn got some good shots off on the outside but Baker had joy on the inside nicking a close round.
Ref Kieran McCann scored 77 to 75 Flynn I had 77 to 76 Flynn.
Dexter’s Thoughts
What a fight, Kane Baker showed the heart of a lion as he took on an unbeaten fighter who thought this was just a formality. Baker gave this 100 percent, took this Matchroom hot prospect into deep waters, and won the contest on many people’s cards. I had him losing by 1 round but some of the rounds were close and could have gone either way and I would have not been shocked if it had been given to Kane. Baker can walk away from this fight with his head held high and after this performance, I am sure Eddie Hearn will be getting him on another Matchroom show very soon to test another hot prospect.
