Tommy 'Guns' Down Abid To Claim Title

Birmingham’s Tommy ‘Gun’ Collins shot down his opponent in his Midlands area title fight at the Eastside Rooms Birmingham (20.12.24). The twenty-six-year-old was taking on Sajid Abid (30) from Derby in a ten round super lightweight contest for the area title. Collins who had been out of the ring for over a year cane into the contest with a record of ten wins with no defeats with Abid coming in with a record of fourteen wins and two defeats. Both fighters came in nine stone thirteen with Chris Dean reffing the contest.

Collins started brightly getting his jab straight away, Abid seemed to be taking a good look before engaging landing some nice shots but Collins won the round. Collins started the second well landing some nice combinations, Collins was then caught with a nice hook that buckled his legs with the ref counting him while Collins protested the count. Collins came back landing a nice shot which made Abid touch down, Abid took the count and then continued to exchange shots to the end of the round.

AbId landed some nice shots in the third but Collins was just out gunning him landing the cleaner more eye-catching shots to win the round. Abid came out strong in the fourth landing a nice backhand and then a flurry of shots Collins returned fire in a close round with Collins just nicking the round.

Frantic start to the fifth round with Collins letting some nice combinations, Abid returned fire with some heavy shots but Collins was relentless letting shots go pinning Abid To the ropes with ref Chris Dean jumping in stopping the contest two minutes fifthly four seconds of the fifth round.

Collins wins and is the Bew Midland area  Super lightweight Champion.

Dexter’s Thoughts

What a great performance by the Birmingham city fan Collins  who had over three hundred and fifty fans cheering him on. Collins who nearly quit the sport after having a year off the noble art with his father and Coach Dean convincing him to roll the dice and have a crack at the Midlands title. Collins was in a determined mood and from the first bell you could see he was not going to be denied. Abid landed some good shots with both fighters touching down in the second but this just contributed to a great fight. Collins is now super lightweight Midland’s area champ and this could be a stepping stone to bigger titles. I could see Collins challenging for a English or even a British title by the end of 2025 Collins look great in this contest and I think the best is yet to come from Tommy  ‘Gun’ Collins.
