Northampton's Ben Vaughan was crowned Midlands Area welterweight champion with a sensational first round stoppage at the Eastside Rooms Birmingham (12.94.24). The twenty-four-year-old southpaw who was unbeaten in eight fights coming into this fight was taking on Liam Gould in this ten-round contest. Gould (26) from Wolverhampton came into the contest with an unbeaten record of six without defeat. Gould's weighed in ten stone with Vaughan coming in ten stone six for this vacant title with Chris Dean refereeing.
Fast start by both boxers as both of them landing good shots at the start of the first round. Vaughan then started to take control landing sharp combinations to the head and body with dome cracking shots and seeming to be able to miss with the southpaw right hook. Gould had no reply to Vaughan’s pressure and was caught with a cracking right hook that dropped him. Gould lay flat out on the floor and done how managed to get to his feet, ref Chris Dean then waved the fight over two minutes and forty-nine seconds into the first round.

Dexter’s Thoughts
What a performance by Ben Vaughan tonight, he came out with serious intent in his first title fight and sensationally ended it with a first-round stoppage. He beat a good unbeaten opponent in Gould and made a big statement with this stoppage and it is planned to see he will go on to challenge for bigger titles. He is now nine unbeaten and I’m sure it won’t be long before he steps on to one of the bigger promotions and fights for bigger titles. Congratulations to Ben Vaughan and I look forward to seeing him fight again very soon.
