Yafai dominated Edwards in Interim World Title Clash

Birmingham’s Galal Yafai (31) was in dominant form at the Resorts World Birmingham as he took on ex world champion Sunny Edwards (28) for the interim WBC world Flyweight title (30.11.24). The Matchroom promotions show was being aired live on DAZN and was called Bloodline With Yafai and Edwards being the main event. There had been a lot of back and forth from Edwards brother Charlie and Yafai two brother Kal and Gamal with both fighters had kept it respectful throughout the build up. Yafai came into the contest with an unbeaten record of nine wins as a professional with Edwards only having one defeat in twenty one contests. Both fighters weighed in at seven stone nine in the flyweight division scheduled for twelve three minute rounds.

Yafai came out firing in the first round looking to land big shots from the start, Edwards took them well but couldn’t seem to set himself up to counter and fired back but was a cracking round for Yafai. Edwards stayed on the back foot in the second and landed nice some counters but Yafai was relentless with his approach overwhelming Edwards with hard fast combinations and a educational high tempo press. Edwards stated in his corner during the break between the second and third round say that he didn’t want to be there, but did get up and fight on. Yafai continued to dominant the fight landing nice combinations with not much coming back from Edwards.

Edwards showed real heart and continued to look to counter in round four and five but seemed of the pace and one step behind Yafai. The end came in the sixth round with the ref asking Edwards to show him something as Yafai kept up the relentless pressure eventually jumping in to save Edwards from anymore punishment.

Dexter’s Thoughts

What a great performance and a statement made by Yafai, Edwards is one of the top flyweight around and Galal York care of him with ease. Edwards just wasn’t at the races and has now said he is going to retire. He did show some heart but telling you corner you don’t want to be there is just mental to me. I can see Edwards coming back after he has took so time off, but at the moment Yafai has put himself in world title contention in only ten fights. To me he is the best out of the three brothers and I can see the Olympic Gold medallist winning one or even more world title in the next few years. I look forward to seeing him in the ring very soon.
