Birmingham’s Gamal Yafai lived up to his nickname of ‘The Beast’ on his return to the ring stopping Sean Cairn in the fourth round on the Matchroom promotions show in Cardiff (4.6.22) Super Bantamweight Yafia (30) was making a return to the ring after losing his EBU European title to Jason Cunningham in May of 2021.
The fight kicked off the main part of the Matchroom show at the Motorpoint arena Cardiff
which was being shown live on Dazn. Yafai took his time at the start of the 8 rounder as himself and southpaw Carin took a look at each other. In the second round after being told by corner man Spencer McCracken to pick up the pace and used his jab more, Yafai controled the round and was getting though with some big shots. Yafai had Cairns down in the thirds with a great combination, Cairns took a count and saw the round out. Yafai went hunting for the finish in the fourth dropping Cairn for the second time with Csirn getting up only for Yafai to pour on the pressure until the ref stopped the fight in 1 minute 55 second of the fourth.
Dexter’s Thought’s
Absolute great performance by the middle brother in the Yafai dynasty as he looks to get himself back into title contention. Gamal showed he still has the tools to get the job done and would have learned a lot from the Cunningham defeat. I can only see title fights in his career and I can honestly see him progressing past European honours and claiming a world title at some point in his future. I would really like to see all three of the Yafia brothers headlining on the same card in Birmingham with them all fighting for titles. This would be a great advert for Midland’s boxing and could give some of the up and coming prospects the chance to shine on a massive stage.
